Caleb's Progress

Caleb...following his first bath at home on 03/12/08

I suppose it's time for a little update on our Caleb. First of all, now that the jaundice appears to be exiting his body (praise God!!), we are starting to focus on his weight. We had very disappointing news on Tuesday afternoon when we saw that he had dropped back down under 7 lbs., to 6-15. The doctor was adamant that we return on Wednesday, and again on Friday to recheck his weight. When we got home from Tuesday's appointment, we were hoping some of the things that we had discussed about nursing/feeding would be useful and applicable to our situation. But again, our day was basically ruined by one lousy doctor's appointment. It was becoming more and more apparent that these little doctor's visits, as attempts to help Caleb gain weight and help us as parents, were actually killing us all in the process. We were becoming physically, emotionally and, most importantly, spiritually worn out.

In turning to God in prayer, we realized that we simply had to put our feet down as parents and tell the doctor that we wouldn't be coming to Wednesday's appointment. That quick visit would throw off the rhythym of the entire day for Caleb's feeding and naps, and our feeding and naps, too...to make matters worse. I think that God is already maturing us as parents, and not to "dog" doctors or others in the medical field, but as "they" always say, "you've got to be your own advocate!"...and since Caleb doesn't have a lot to say about things at this point, I guess we need to do the talking for him. So we scrapped the Wednesday and Friday visits, and combined them into one visit today. And you know what, Caleb's gaining weight again!! He is now 7-2, which is a 3 oz. gain in 48 hrs -- go Caleb! Thanks for your prayers!

We've learned a couple big lessons in parenting a newborn already:

  1. Firstly, even an infant knows how to let us know when he's hungry. We were so caught up in trying to "clock watch" and adjust Caleb's schedule to ours, that all 3 of us were miserable! By allowing Caleb to give us the visual (and sometimes verbal) cues about when he is hungry or sleepy, or needs his "drawers" cleaned out, we can...
  2. ...take a deep breath, and just try and ease up...and so far that's working!
  3. Trust God completely. He knows best, for sure!

Trusting God for what He thinks you need is definately right. This whole parenting thing is all about trust. Good Job on putting your foot down with the doctor. It's hard, but you know what's best for your little one. It seems like things are slowly getting better. It takes time to adjust, but as he gets older you will both be able to handle more and more and before you know it ya'll will be pro's. Greg and I work together now better than ever. It will strengthen your relationship more than you know even though it seems hard. "In your weakness HE is strong." Hang in there!
